Bishop's Latin School
Alumni Association
John C. Ferrante, PhD.
We sadly announce the passing of  Mr. John “ Fern” Ferrante. Mr Ferrante died on Monday February 1, 2010 after a long illness.

Known as “Fern” at the Bishop’s Latin School, Mr Ferrante taught English Literature and Creative Writing for many years. He was always known for his wry sense of humor, his off color and biting comments and his verbal barbs. Every alumnus from the Latin School has his own “Fern” experience or story. No one could escape from his daily routine.

Dr. Ferrante graduated from Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School, Duquesne University. He received his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.

This is a sad time for the Latin School Family. Please keep “Fern” in your prayers.

I send my heartfelt condolences to all his friends, family and former students. Dr. Ferrante was my English teacher at the Bishop's Latin School over forty years ago but his memory is still fresh and alive in my heart. I especially remember with fondness his wry sense of humor with which he would from time to time employ in class; he was beloved by the students for his good humor even when it had a little barb in it for us as for example , his oft repeated rhetorical question " - "You bums haven't read this , have you"? He was a good teacher who did not tolerate mediocrity but who inspired his students to excel in English literature and creative writing . I and all his former students at the Latin School regret his passing and pray in the ancient language of our Church" 'Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiesct in Pace!
